Goodnight Oslo

Review of Robyn Hitchcock's Goodnight Oslo and giveaway

Photo By George WrightGeorge WrightWith most of his recent releases being of the archival sort – two box sets in the last two years in the form of I Wanna Go Backwards and Luminous Groove and with more to come – you might be forgiven for thinking that Robyn Hitchcock had his hands full reflecting on an enormous and impressive career. You would also, of course, be wrong. Even while supervising the extensive retrospective project, Hitchcock found the time to regroup with the Venus 3 – the 3/5 of R.E.M., Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin and Scott McCaughey, with whom he recorded 2006’s wonderful Ole Tarantula – and recorded yet another new album, the just-released Goodnight Oslo.

Unlike the bright and sprightly Tarantula, Oslo feels darker in mood and more expansive in tone, favouring more meditative, droning song structures and incorporating the likes of strings, horns and backing singers into the brew. But more importantly, like its predecessor, Oslo is full of classic-sounding, jangly pop songs turned on their heads by Hitchcock’s clever and curious wordplay and distinctive delivery. Having been at it for thirty-odd years, the man has a signature. And more importantly, he’s still working at an impressively high level. While he may have spent the last little while looking backwards, there’s no question he’s still moving ever-forwards.

Hitchcock and his crew are touring North America and will be at the Mod Club in Toronto this Thursday night, April 16. I saw them there in 2006 and even for someone only casually familiar with Hitchcock’s oeuvre, it was a tremendously enjoyable show. This should be no different. Montt Mardié delivers best-of and new album

Photo via MySpaceMySpaceWay back in my first post of the year, I gushed a bit about Sweden’s Montt Mardie and his first UK release, the Introducing ….. The Best Of compilation of his first two Swedish albums Drama and Pretender/Clocks. It was – and still is – a wonderful collection of lush and giddy throwback pop to any and every era of pop you can imagine. I wasn’t sure at the time if the album was actually out, and as it turned out it wasn’t – and still isn’t. It’s now set for a May 4 release in the UK but in the interim, Mardie hasn’t been idle.

He released his third proper studio album, entitled Skaizerkite, this week in Sweden. There’s both an MP3 and video for the first single but beyond that, being somewhat less than fluent in Swedish, information on this release is a bit hard to come by. I did manage to discern, however, that it’d cost me around $28 on import to get a copy of the album sent to me. Um, ouch. I’d forgotten the joys of buying imports. I think I will hold off just a bit on that one and hope that a less expensive option arises – after all, I’m still getting lots of mileage out of Introducing, even after so many months.

It’s just a short note but this update at The Clientele’s website stating that they’re almost completed their new album brightened my day – after all, it was posted in February so surely it’s done by now? Their last two records – 2007’s God Save The Clientele and 2005’s Strange Geometry – almost perfectly encapsulates the feeling of wandering aimlessly around London, which is to say my happy place. Can’t wait to get another dose of that.

It’s rather lighter on big names – which is to say there really aren’t any – but I enjoyed the first two volumes enough to want the full set. Thanks to A Good Day For Airplay for the tip-off.

SxSW 2009 Night Three

Photo By Frank YangFrank YangConsidering that Friday afternoon was arguably one of the best blocks of music experiences I’ve ever had at SxSW, it figured that the karma pendulum would have to swing the other way sooner or later. As it happened, it was sooner.

The official portion of the day started downstairs at Waves, a narrow little venue on 6th, where Shad was kicking things off. You can insert my standard “not really a hip-hop guy” disclaimer here, but I really grew to like his The Old Prince Still Lives At Home during Polaris season last year, and though I’d caught bits of his live show, had never seen him do a proper set. Guess I can check that off my list. Backed by a live rhythm section and DJ, Shad was a complete entertainer, his raps flowing into his banter and back while evidencing loads of charisma and good humour.

It was then up to the Central Presbyterian Church for Fanfarlo, which was the perfect setting for their ornate, orchestral folk-rock. Frontman Simon Balthazar, natty in a bow tie, looked like a nebbish music teacher leading his charges in exercises in musical splendor, in this case their really excellent new album Reservoir. I commented on the Arcade Fire reference points when previewing this show but the comparisons go far beyond just sonic and stylistic similarities. Fanfarlo also manage to create the same sense of excitement and wide-eyed wonder that I got on early listenings of Funeral. Very highly recommended.

So it sounds like things were going pretty well, right? What on earth was I complaining about? Well, the next stop on the sched was Maggie Mae’s Rooftop, and one thing I’d forgotten when planning things out was how much I absolutely hated Maggie Mae’s rooftop. If you’ve never been, the “venue” is a not-that-wide balcony around the perimeter of the venue with little in the way of actual sightlines, a low, poorly-lit stage and the washrooms just off to the side so that people needing to expel their beer have to fight their way through the crowd and walk beside the band to get to the restrooms. So lame. And of course it’s always packed, even for acts you’d think were a bit niche – like British bluegrass revivalists Mumford & Sons. They were pretty terrific last year in support of Laura Marling (who was standing behind be trying to videotape the proceedings) and when they finally got their sound issues sorted, they were pretty terrific again. With four-part harmonies and superb musicianship to go along with emotionally resonant songs that really do seem to bring new life to the genre. Great performance, shame about the venue.

And yet I didn’t leave, for Wheat were set for the downstairs – a much less heinous locale than the upstairs, to be fair – at 11. In the half-decade since I saw them last, they’d essentially split, re-formed, lost a member, and generally gone through more existential shit than any band should ever have to – and yet, here they were, back again and with a new album ready for June release. Their persistence alone was reason to cheer, but the jury is still out on the new material. That the band – now with Brendan Harney on keys and vocals and with a new member behind the kit while Scott Levesque handles guitar, lead vocals and epically awkward stage banter – was having a great time being back was unquestionable, but their aesthetic has gotten so art-pop eclectic that it’s difficult to get a handle on. I mean, a dance song? Really? Maybe I’m just too emotionally invested in their old stuff, which they thankfully included enough of in the set. But I will still give the new record a proper chance when it arrives.

By rights, The Bird & The Bee’s midnight show at Karma Lounge should have been a disaster, if not cancelled outright. For starters, the band on before them – some awful dirge-country outfit – was running a half hour late (worst words in the English language – “we have three more songs”). The venue was packed, sweaty and generally horrid (two banks of green LED lights ensured the absolute least flattering light for the performers possible). And when the Bird & The Bee finally got to set up, they were incapable of getting Greg Kurstin’s keyboards working through the monitors. I was tired, drinks had been spilled on and around me and with things looking bleak – the SxSW volunteer and stage manager almost got in a fight – I was ready to cut bait and sleep.

But patience was rewarded as the band improvised with their equipment and not only salvaged the evening but made it a triumph. With their matching primary colour plastic dresses and synchronized dance moves, to say nothing of some wonderful songs, Inara George and her band literally managed to turn my frown upside-down. The set was shortened a bit due to the delays but they were still able to fit in the essentials – “My Love”, “Fucking Boyfriend” and “Love Letter To Japan” – as well as a couple of delicious covers, Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” and The Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love”. Swoon. Too short and I want/need them to tour up to Toronto ASAP. Do it.

So perhaps my lead-in to this post was a bit dramatic. It was hardly a bad night, not even close, though there were moments. I think the weariness of the week is starting to really hit me. But got to pull up the ol’ bootstraps… last day! Woo!

Dusk Till Dawn

Six acts to watch at SxSW 2009

Photo via ladyhawkemusic.comLadyhawkeHello from sunny – and goodness, is it sunny – Austin, Texas, where I will be spending the next five days or so inundating you with dispatches from SxSW Music that you probably care nothing about. I’m okay with that. The blow-by-blow will start tomorrow, but for today I’ll do the preview thing, listing off a half-dozen of the new or new-to-me acts that I’m most looking forward to seeing over the next four days and nights.

I admit to feeling a twinge of guilt when I listen to New Zealander Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke, but any reservations I have about enjoying something so utterly and unabashedly ’80s retro evaporate right about the moment the chorus kicks in. My initial experience with “Paris Is Burning,” for example, went something like “oh my god I hope she’s paying Gary Numan royalt– OMG ENDORPHIN RUSH”, and that buzz recurs all throughout the record. You must understand, I grew up in the ’80s and as much as I might want to deny it for cred’s sake, that shit is absolutely baked into my DNA. Hell, I even loved the Matthew Broderick movie that’s Brown’s creative namesake. The synths, the guitars, the glossy sonics, the massive pop hooks, all of it triggers something very deep and primal and it will not be denied. On her 2008 self-titled debut, Brown manages to shed the really dubious aspects of the 1980s production aesthetic and just keep the good stuff. Or maybe she doesn’t and I’m in too deep to realize it. But you know what? I don’t care.

Ladyhawke’s official showcase goes tonight at Stubb’s at 10PM. Brown has been diagnosed with Aspberger’s Syndrome and apparently is still getting used to live performance but she doesn’t have to make eye contact – just play “Back Of The Van”. I’m really looking forward to this set. Like, totally.

Though they’re decidedly overused as reference points, in the case of London’s Fanfarlo, the Arcade Fire really are an apt reference point. Just imagine if they were more folkish, less angsty and their frontman sounded like a more lilting David Byrne rather than the tightly-wound, live wire variety. I suspect that this isn’t the most compelling description of the band and for that I apologize, but their latest album Reservoir is really a grand and sweeping record with the aforementioned characteristics and is definitely worth your time. Their official showcase is on Friday at 9PM at the Central Presbyterian Church, but if you can’t make that they’re playing a number of unofficial shows throughout the week.

Leeds’ Sky Larkin should be familiar to anyone who reads this site, so introductions should be unnecessary. Sufficed to say that I’m glad to finally have a chance to see them live at midnight Wednesday evening on Red 7’s patio, even if they are going to be in Toronto in a couple weeks at the Opera House opening for Los Campesinos! on April 1.

This Is Fake DIY reports that the band’s next single, “Antibodies”, will be released on cassette tape. Oh, Sky Larkin.

I don’t even know when/where/how I stumbled across Austin’s Ume but I’m so very glad I did. Loud and abrasive but with a gooey pop center, they sound to me like Belly covering Nirvana – remember, even though I grew up in the ’80s, I came of age in the ’90s and a combination like that is irresistible. If they can rip it up live the way they do in their video, this is going to as good as I’m hoping. They play at 7:30 tonight at Maggie Mae’s.

Crocodile are from Oklahoma and sound nothing like the Flaming Lips. Just to be clear. What they do sound like is chirpy, female-fronted guitar pop with just the right dollop of synth in the mix. No angle on this one – just catchy, straight-ahead good tunes. Not to be confused with Crocodiles, who will also be in Austin this week, albeit in an unofficial (no SxSW showcase) capacity. Crocodile (singular) are on at 8 tonight on the rooftop of Wave.

I’d been hoping for a chance to see Athens, Georgia’s Venice Is Sinking since first hearing their debut Sorry About The Flowers back in 2006, but figured it was unlikely they’d ever find cause or opportunity to tour this far north. Happily, the release of the follow-up Azar, out March 31, has garnered the band a SxSW showcase – tonight at 10PM at Ace’s Lounge – where I’ll finally get to savour their lush orch-gaze in person. Yes, I said orch-gaze. Shut up.

Exclaim reports that Echo & The Bunnymen will be releasing a live, orchestrally-enhanced version of Ocean Rain recorded last November in Liverpool, on or around May 1. Needless to say, I’m excited to be seeing them – finally – this week, if in somewhat less auspicious settings than the Liverpool Echo Arena. Which isn’t to say a gay Texan cowboy bar won’t have its own unique charm.

Camera Obscura has released a video for the first single from My Maudlin Career, out April 21, and I daresay this is easily the band’s best album yet. They play Hot Freaks at the Mohawk on Saturday afternoon at 5PM.
