Leave Them All Behind

Excellent Online is reporting that ex-Ride frontman Mark Gardener is about to embark on a solo music career. His last project, The Animalhouse with Ride skinsman Loz pretty much disappeared without a trace (and really, it wasn’t very good. I am probably one of three people in the world with a copy of the album…). After witnessing Tarantula and the abomination that was Hurricane #1, the optimist would say that it was obvious Mark was the real talent in Ride and Andy Bell lost his mind sometime around 1995 and that this new material is something to look forward to. We’ll see. I’m more interested in the bit about Mark doing solo acoustic shows in North America…

Aaaah. Friday Friday Friday. I need a nap.

The Execution Of All Things

Okay, this was different. Coming home from rehearsal tonight, I get to the driveway of my building and find my way blocked by police tape. The other end of the driveway as well. The police have cordoned off the entire side of the building facing the YMCA. Oddly, there are no police cruisers with sirens flashing or people milling around, no chalk outlines, just yellow tape restricting access to my building. I briefly considered going under the tape, but figured it might be wiser to just walk around to the other side of the building which thankfully was still accessible. No security guy at the desk, so I just headed upstairs none the wiser as to why my domicile was a crime scene. Turns out that there were gunshots reported somewhere between my building and the back wall of the Y, hence the police presence. I can’t say I overly surprised… while I live in what would by all rights be called a nice part of town, there’s still stuff that goes on within a block of me that calls for head-down, no eye contact ettiquite.

Dubya is making his first visit to Canada on May 5. I’m quite tempted to make a road trip to Ottawa and offer the leader of the free world a banana. It’s uncanny.

Speaking of road trips, Rilo Kiley is hitting the road, but aren’t coming anywhere closer than 10 hours away. If they were getting just a little closer, like Detroit or Cleveland, I’d consider making a trek. Okay, maybe not Detroit. Not so much because the band is especially pilgrimage-worthy, though they are excellent, but just as an excuse to get the hell out of Dodge. Alas.

RETURN MY CDS

Almost my favorite time of the year again. I can’t wait.

These guys have the right idea. I should buy stocks.

Everyone at work is still sick. Well enough to come in and contaminate the rest of us, though. Remarkably I still feel fine. Well, that’s not entirely true – I am tired. Weary. Worn out. Exhausted. This isn’t illness-related, though. Just… tired. You know, tired. I need to recharge. The weekend is still too far away.

New Low

Some interesting discourse going on about Shania Twain. Yeah, that one. I scarcely pay any attention to her, but reading this piece from the current issue of Rolling Stone, coupled with this piece, which considers both the RS article and her performance and the Super Bowl… well, I’ve always found her a little frightening but now I’m thinking she could have given Arnold a run for his money if she’d been cast as the female Terminator in T3.

Now they’re talking about Nicole Kidman as Catwoman? Eyuck. Mind you, I don’t put much stock into that article. Christopher Nolan has signed on to do ONE Batman movie, and not Year One, which is Darren Aranofsky’s, and not Batman Vs Superman, which was a) Wolfgang Petersen’s, and b) is dead dead dead. Petersen is making Troy and Supe’s next big-screen appearance will be in Brett Ratner’s film.

Seed Toss

I’m discussing a possible deal with some guys from the FDP about swapping guitar necks. One guy has a maple Nashville neck and another guy is looking for a rosewood Nashville neck. I would prefer a maple on mine. We may do a three-way deal with the maple neck coming to me, my rosewood neck going to the fellow over in Ireland (!), who would give cash to the guy with the maple neck. Sounds convoluted, but it could work. I need to actually take possession of the guitar first, though. I can wait. I can wait. And if the three-way deal doesn’t work out, I can still buy the maple neck directly and sell my neck on eBay or something.

And speaking of eBay… the last time I sold anything was… well a while ago. I thought that PayPal had instituted some sort of tiered system where if you wanted to collect money, ie SELL anything, you’d need to pay a member fee or something. I said nuts to that and put the idea of selling anything online out of my head. Well I’m looking at their conditions again, and not seeing anything that would prevent me from collecting money and transferring it into my bank account. I have no idea what I thought had happened… but if it turns out I can collect money from PayPal and only get charged a per-transaction fee when I collect the money, well hell. I’ve got loads of crap I can sell. Schweet.

I got to watch my first new episode of 24 tonight. I need a cigarette. Okay, it wasn’t all that – nothing really monumental happened but it moved things along. And all I can say about the Kimberly storyline is I am rooting for the cougar.

From the “um, okay” files – recipes from Superchunk’s Laura Ballance. This one is for roasted vegetables and sausage. Mmm, sausage. Again, thanks to link-o-meister and Hide-The-Sausage champion, Kyle.
