It feels like Monday, but it’s already Wednesday. It’s gonna be a good (short) week.
They are currently making a film based on the death of Gram Parsons, or more accurately, the theft of his corpse. It’s a great story, and I’m hoping it’ll be done well (though the casting of lead Jackass Johnny Knoxville as Phil Kaufman doesn’t fill me with great excitement). Being a convincing actor is not the same thing as riding a shopping cart into the side of a semi. Anyway, Grand Theft Parsons is released in the UK on September 19, and hopefully there’ll be a North American release to follow.
Eww eww eww. Giant sea creature washes ashore in Chile.

At Sudeep’s recommendation, I went to see Winged Migration at Market Square, the new discount movie theatre in Toronto ($5.50 matinee!!). It’s a documentary that follows the migration of all sorts of birds across all continents, using some I-don’t-know-how-they-did-it camera technology to follow the birds up close, everywhere they went. Really, the cinematography is amazing. I think a ‘making of’ would be just as fascinating as the film itself, and that’s saying something. Hopefully the DVD will come loaded with extras. It’s not a must-buy, but I would rent it for decent bonus features. And Winged Migration takes the prize for least likely place to find a Nick Cave song (his song, “To Be By Your Side” runs over the closing credits). Good film, recommended if you like birds. Nature kicks ass.
I also watched Mr. Deeds, which was surprisingly funny and I didn’t feel ashamed to enjoy it. I think I actually don’t mind Adam Sandler when he’s NOT playing a retard. And Winona. Ah, Winona.
Best Liz Phair review ever.

File under: fun. The Best Of Craigslist. Man, I wish the Toronto one was this wacky.
Things I did on my day off: Got my hair cut. Rode my bike around. Sat under a tree in the park, listened to music and read. Good stuff. I was going to go see The Quiet American but considering that it starts in half an hour and I still haven’t eaten, I doubt that’s going to happen. But to cop from the Comedy Network’s tagline – it’s been time well wasted.

The Polyphoinic Spree is coming to Toronto! They have two nights booked at Lee’s Palace, September 29 and 30. I haven’t heard more than a few snippets of their stuff, but for well over a year I’ve been under the impression that this is not an experience to be missed. How pften do you get to catch a band whose lineup that makes the Hidden Cameras look like a power trio? Oklahoman wacky-popsters Starlight Mints open.
The Ride BBC sessions album Waves has been confirmed for an October 7 worldwide release on Ignition Records.
Another scathing review of Liz Phair. Sure, they’re a dime a dozen but this one’s worth reading – well reasoned, well written and far less knee-jerk clever than some (hello Pitchfork). From TMFTML.
I’ve put up a top 10 list for the first half of 2003.
This super-extended long weekend thing. I could get used to this.
