CONTEST – Hey Rosetta! @ The Phoenix – November 24, 2011

What: Orchestral and open-hearted Polaris perennials from St. John’s, Newfoundland
Why: They’ve already been through town a number of times for their latest album Seeds, but clearly it hasn’t been enough – hence the two-night stand
When: Thursday, November 24, 2011 (that’s the second night)
Where: The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto (19+)
Who else: The bill features a strong, internationally-flavoured undercard of Seattle’s Ivan & Alyosha and Australia’s Jezabels.
How: Tickets for the show are $20 in advance but courtesy of Collective Concerts, I’ve got two pairs of passes to give away for the show. CONTEST – Elliott Brood @ The Phoenix – November 18, 2011

What: Toronto-based, self-described “death country” practitioners who just released their third album Days Into Years earlier this Fall.
Why: In the midst of a cross-Canada tour in support of the new record, the trio will make a stop at home to play to their neighbours and do some laundry.
When: Friday, November 18, 2011
Where: The Phoenix in Toronto (19+)
Who else: Fellow Toronto country-singing types $100 will open up.
How: Tickets are $20 in advance but courtesy of Collective Concerts, I have two pairs of passes to give away for the show as well as a copy of Days Into Year on CD. What: Toronto folk-rock trio who released their sophomore effort Departing in Spring of this year.
Why: Ever the road warriors, they’ve done at least two if not more North American jaunts in support of Departing; this hometown performance will be their last of the year.
When: Thursday, November 17, 2011
Where: The Phoenix in Toronto (all-ages)
Who else: Parlovr and The Paint Movement round out the bill.
How: Tickets for the show are $21 in advance, but courtesy of Collective Concerts, I have a pair of passes to give away to the show. What: Despite a heavyweight lineup featuring principals and members of Man Man, Islands and Modest Mouse, they initially garnered attention for having actor Michael Cera as their bassist.
Why: With Cera no longer a part of the band, they are hitting the road in support of their debut Out Of Love.
When: Wednesday, November 16, 2011
Where: The Great Hall in Toronto (19+)
Who else: Brooklyn punk band Mr. Dream are tourmates, hopefully for reasons beyond how great the venue marquees will look with both band names up there.
How: Tickets for the show are $14 in advance but courtesy of Embrace, I have two pairs of passes to give away to the show. What: Washington, DC bassist and icon, probably best known for co-founding a kind-of influential band called Fugazi.
Why: With the hardcore/punk forebears on hiatus since 2003, Lally has been going it solo and released his third album Why Should I Get Used To It earlier this year.
When: Saturday, November 12, 2011
Where: The Drake Underground in Toronto (19+)
Who else: Chicago-based cellist Alison Chesley who performs as Helen Money supports and also plays in Lally’s band
How: Tickets for the show are $10 in advance but courtesy of Collective Concerts, I have two pairs of passes to give away for the show.
