CONTEST – Stars @ The Mod Club – May 5, 2010
Frank YangSo that took, what – 30? 40 seconds? To the surprise of absolutely no one, the Toronto stop on Stars’ upcoming intimate cross-Canada tour – May 5 at the Mod Club – was sold out before you could set yourself on fire, even if you’d prepped by dousing yourself in kerosene with a Zippo at the ready.
But if you weren’t amongst the 500 or so lucky ones to get tickets to hear the band play their forthcoming album The Five Ghosts in its entirety well in advance of its June 22 street date, fear not – I’ve got your back. Courtesy of LiveNation, I’ve got three (3) pairs of passes to give away to the show. No, they don’t come attached to a bar of Wonka chocolate but they may as well.
To enter, you need to take a look at the poll that the band have set up for fans to choose their four-song encore – presumably the only non-Ghosts material that will be heard that evening – and tell me what your perfect encore for the show would be. Leave your picks in a comment on this post and make sure your email is included; additional commentary is not necessary but always fun. Winners will be chosen at random from all entries submitted before midnight, April 28.

Start off with “Calendar Girl”, nice and slow then kick it up with “Reunion”, move into “My Favourite Book”, and finish off with Your Ex-Lover Is Dead (big finish!).
I love you guys so much, “set yourself on fire” is my favourite album of all time (that’s right, higher up than the Beatle’s “Help” album or Death Cab’s “Plans”).
I saw you live at York last year, but it wasn’t the best venue and I really really want to see you at the Mod Club, it’s a great venue!!!

I wanted to put something off of Set Yourself On Fire, but I only get 4.
Elevator Love Letter is a good way to stat since it is uptempo, plus we get to hear Torquil and Amy
I think toxic holiday will give them a chance to do some fun extended song stuff since it gets long and blippy.
14 Forever is my favorite off of Sad Robots and also has a strong chorus.
Take Me To The Riot has a super power chorus and would be a good closer since it can end with one guitar riff over and over again.
I have heard them live a few times and I can’t wait for Five Ghosts.

because it captures the Torq/Amy verse trade-off perhaps better than any other of their songs; killer lyrics capture the melancholy of the moment beautifully
Bitches In Tokyo —
a seldom-heard favourite, great guitar and energy
Take Me to the Riot —
superb melody, out-Smiths Morrissey in the bridge, love the harmonies in the chorus
Ageless Beauty —
because it was my entry point into Stars (sentimental points), reminding me of early Eurythmics (e.g. “Belinda”) — and it’s always a rush!
So hard to choose just four!
