CONTEST – Stars Signed Swag

Stars released their new album In Our Bedroom After The War digitally over a month ago and will release it in physical form on September 25. This record is not relevant to this contest. Instead, I’m turning the clock back a couple years to 2005’s Set Yourself On Fire and this past May’s remix collection of said album, Do You Trust Your Friends?.

The former was the band’s big breakthrough album, making them one of the bigger-profile act in the country and abroad while the latter was a self-curated record of remixes and covers by friends and associates that garnered reviews ranging from faint praise to raging vitriol. I myself haven’t heard it but suspect my opinions would fall more towards the “interesting, but unnecessary” end of the spectrum.

But I’m pretty sure no one will complain about the existence of the record when taken in the context of a free, autographed slab of vinyl. Or plastic. As the case may be. Ahem. Anyways, courtesy of Arts & Crafts, I’ve got a bundle of Stars stuff to give away, “a bundle” being the scientific term for “five”. Specifically, the following:

  • 1 copy of Set Yourself On Fire on vinyl LP, autographed by the band
  • 1 copy of Do You Trust Your Friends? on vinyl LP, autographed by the band
  • 3 copies of Do You Trust Your Friends? on CD, autographed by the band

You can have a look at the goods here.

To throw your proverbial hat into the proverbial ring for one of these very literal prizes, read the following fine print (actually rendered in exactly the same size as the not-so-fine print):

  1. You must leave me a comment on this post answering this rather cryptic and yet direct question – “Do you trust your friends to set you on fire?”. Ponder it and reply as you see fit. Winners will be selected on creativity and/or dementia.
  2. Also note, in your entry, your order of preference for the prizes if you do win.
  3. You must be a resident of North America.
  4. You must use a valid email address – spambot-proofed is fine. Even if it doesn’t show up properly in the comment, I will have it in the email notification.
  5. You must submit your entry by midnight, September 9 – the same day Stars play V Fest.

That should about do it. If I come up with any new conditions, like the next entrant must bring me a cheeseburger, I’ll post that as we go.

"Do you trust your friends to set you on fire?"

Hmmmm… only as much as I trust them to douse said fire when the need arises, and surely it must. Shouldn’t it?

I’d be happy to take a CD as I’ve got no vinyl playing capabilities.

In two days I’ll be heading into the wild – celebrating a friends forthcoming nuptials (and the end of summer) with three days of houseboating on Lac La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. Among the supplies being lugged into the wilderness is a box of four-year old fireworks that have been waiting for just the right occasion to be set off. Given the anticipated level of inebriation, I fully trust that my friends will set something on fire, though to be honest I really hope it isn’t me (maybe a squirrel or a bear instead – kidding!)

I think I’d prefer one of the slabs of vinyl – my trusty old turntable may be all I have left once I’m forced to sell off my wordly posessions to help pay for a torched houseboat.

  6. Scott Arnold says:

Do I trust my friends to set me on fire? I’d say, resoundingly, yes… the proof? I allowed one of them to teach me how to eat fire a few years back.

This was a guy who showed up for class one day with no eyebrows and bandages on large portions of his face… it was at this point that we learned he ate fire (and had been performing for the previous couple summers on the streets of Canada’s Wonderland)…

A couple weeks later at a friend’s party, I told him I wanted to learn so (trusting the guy who had recently set HIMSELF on fire – apparently he only got as far as the original album [smirk])… I practiced and with a little encouragement and some bravery – I ate fire. Not actually setting myself on fire – but, in the immortal words of Ralph Wiggam, it tasted like burning.

  7. Chris B. says:

I’d trust them a/k/a they’d be physically able. They’re all such notorious chain smokers that even if they couldn’t light a match they’d simply have to douse me in gasoline and merely ash some of their cigarette onto my exposed flesh.

    1. Any and all vinyl would be appealing to me

  8. Ryan says:

"Do you trust your friends to set you on fire?"
Not at all. I still remember them trying to light our cheap vodka on fire one night and couldn’t get it to burn at all. Which is okay because I don’t really trust them to be able to use the fire extinguisher either. But if they can’t get alcohol to burn, I’m sure they’d be hard pressed to get me on fire. Long story short, they resorted to burning our apple jacks, which may have been amusing at the time but in the morning left us kinda hungry with no cereal.
    Order of preference:

    2. Set Yourself on Fire vinyl

  9. Kevin McFaul says:

"Do you trust your friends to set you on fire?"

Of course I do, most of them are lifeguards and will be able to treat the burns they have create. (assuming they don’t put out the fire they started right away)

Not a chance. Most of my friends will someday be going somewhere they’ll be surrounded by fire for an eternity, so they’d likely do it. And you know, flames bite.
    1. SYOF vinyl; 2. DYTYF vinyl; 3. CD. Please? Make me happy…I don’t want to have to set myself on fire…

  12. juepucta says:

There’s this song that says something to the effect of "if you love somebody, set them on fire". Recently this girl, friend of mine, kinda "set me on fire". Although she might not even know it. So, without wanting to sound too much like a craigslist lost connection, my answer is "yep".

  14. SRP Director says:

*folds hands in front of me and recites calmly, school-child style*

    Do I trust my friends
    To set me on fire?
    That, I guess, depends –
    Would it raise my ire?

Or do I really want to burn?
    Perhaps amidst the heat
    Lessons can be learned
    Of victory and defeat.

    If my friends ignited me
    Maybe I would rise
    From the ashes, gleefully
    Like a phoenix, wise.

My friends would love to do it
You see, they’re kind of crazy
Arson wouldn’t phase them a bit
    But they are also lazy

So even if I beg and ask
    With an impassioned plea
I doubt that they’d complete the task
    Of setting me
    On fire.

Even if I wanted them to.

*bows dramatically* Thank you for listening.

  17. CJ says:

i trust my friends to set me aflame,
i do i do! will you do the same?

first upon the gas they pour
then the flame lit on the floor

then the pain oh so delish
that crawls across my pretty flesh

i feel no pain, no hurt no sad
because my friends they arent so bad

they knew the fire and flames were needed
to burn away the lives i’ve live-ed

all these flames they burn the past
i get the chance to lose what has’t

so off i go all bright and new
with friends to thank for all my tunes

  18. Steve Brunton says:

I definitely trust my friends to set me on fire, because my only friend is myself. Who better to douse, light, and extinguish when the time comes!? There is no alternative to self-love. Except maybe real love.

    But who needs that?

Oh, and I would most certainly not be apposed to a big chunk of vinyl coming my way, although a CD would work if necessary.
