CONTEST – Cat Power with The Memphis Rhythm Band @ The Phoenix – November 22

Even though I swore after Cat Power’s transcendent solo show at Lee’s Palace in September that I’d never go see her again – she couldn’t possibly be better than she was on that night – the temptation to see her with the Memphis Rhythm Band who helped make The Greatest exactly that is just is too great. As effective as the material from that record was performed solo, I have to imagine it’d sound equally good if not better with the full Southern soul behind it.

So that’s why I’m going to be at the Phoenix on November 22 and courtesy of Against The Grain, you can be there too. I’ve got three pairs of passes to give away to the show and they can be yours if you follow these simple instructions – leave me a comment on this post telling me who (a person) is the greatest and why. Interpret those criteria as you will. And also leave you correct email address as I will be contacting the winners to get their name for the guest list. The contest will close at midnight, November 14. CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED – congrats to Thierry, Corey and Duarte.

  1. Adam says:

Hi Frank: I’m going to keep it simple and true.
My girlfriend Jill is the greatest. What more can I say about someone that makes me happiest man in the world everyday?

  2. Corey says:

Hey Frank. My wife is the greatest for enduring 14 hours of labour and giving birth to our daughter Mia who’s now two and a half months old. That and all the sleepless nights since. She’s also a HUGE Cat Power fan and hasn’t been out of the house in a while. She/we could really use this.

  3. Sasha Furlani says:

Frank, my cat is the greatest because it has the power to instantly make any room in the apartment the smelliest room on earth.

  4. Carly says:

    Frank,

My dad is the greatest. He had a stroke 4 months ago and now, at age 50, has spent the last 4 months re-learning all of his communication skills – and with far more patience, perseverance and optimism than I would ever have in that situation.

  5. Phil says:

    Dear Frank,
My 43 year old friend Janet is the greatest. She had a crappy bookstore job with a horrible boss and one day quit to live her dream of being a costume designer for a travelling music show! She’s now happier than ever and I love her for it.

  6. modernmod says:

I’m the greatest. Seriously….look it up.

  7. richard says:

geez, my [almost] 12 year old daughter Rebecca is the greatest. we drive each other crazy and scream, shout and glare at each other a lot, but she’s smart, funny and growing up independent. [btw, I know I won’t win but had to say it anyhow. see you tomorrow night @ My Brightest Diamond…and thanks for picking me]

  8. WillyB says:

    Dear Frank,

George Bush is the greatest because he finally fired Donald Rumsfield.

    Fondly,
    Nancy Pelosi

  9. Jessica says:

    Dear Frank,
I am undeniably the greatest because not only did I return the $80 sticking out of a bank machine today but I did that while I only have $24 in my own bank account

    Your Good Samaritan,
    Jessica

  10. Vivi says:

_You_ are the greatest because you actually enjoyed both Borat and Michel Gondry’s movies.

  11. Chris says:

To help me come to my conclusion on who is the greatest, I performed a simple search on the googles for "the greatest person". The conclusion reached on the internets would assume that the 3 greatest people (in order are):

    1) "Me" or "I"
    2) Muhammed Ali
    3) God
    4) Conan O’Brien

My favorite result however, came from a site called "mannequin madness", which referred to an unknown person, possibly one of the aforementioned 4 as having been "the greatest person to work with in selection of a mannequin". If I knew this person, I would probably vote for them as well…

But, to quote Family Feud, which may or may not be the Greatest Game Show of all-time, "I am going to go on my own and say….

GOB Bluth is the Greatest Person".

    Yes, I said it.

    Survey says…..

  12. Thierry says:

I would have to say that the greatest (aside from Ringo Starr, if we are to take his word for it – but then again, should we, since John Lennon wrote that song?) is unarguably Shekar Ramanuja "S.R." Sidarth. Who’s Sidarth you ask? Well, he’s the 20-year-old Virginia native who, by filming now-former U.S. Senator George Allen calling him "Macaca" and welcoming him to America, single-handedly started the chain of events that won the Senate for the Democrats. Thanks Sidarth!!!

And if that’s not enough to be called the Greatest, I don’t know what is…

  13. WillyB says:

I like Theirry’s answer. I hope he wins.

  14. Cameron Ketchum says:

In the spirit of the season, I’m going to give one up for all the Veterans out there. Despite my own lefty, peace-nik leanings, the idea that a bunch of kids could have spent so much time stuck in muddy trenches – dodging bullets and seeing unseeable things – has always made me want to stand up, well up, and applaud.
The reasons may have been more clear but there wasn’t much choice and it was a shitty deal. The Greatest indeed.

BUT Corey’s wife should really get some tiks as well. That’s some great work. Or Carly’s Dad….damn, so much greatness.

  15. Paul says:

My wife is the greatest for still being with me, even though I am always at work. And my dog is great too for welcoming me home everyday like I am the greatest ever.

  16. Moira Teed says:

The first brave soul to eat a Geoduck is the greatest! Either they had a wicked sense of humor/personality or they were really really desperate (perhaps in more ways than one!). Check it out:

  17. Matt says:

With regards to the topic, I am going to have to say that Susan Marshall is the greatest. For those of you that do not know, she is responsible for the back-up vocals both on Chan’s new record, ‘The Greatest’ and in her live shows. Susan’s (along with the rest of the Memphis Rhythm Band) on the front line every night helping provide comfort to Chan on stage and keeping those preformances going strong, which is never a guarantee when it comes to Chan.

  18. andrea says:

this cat power podcast is the greatest.

    http://music.aol.com/artist

as it offers insight to the genius and heart felt personality of chan marshall.

  19. Viva Toronto says:

I say Toronto is the greatest city in the world!!

  20. Sarah says:

Pitchfork is the greatest because the Chan Marshall/Fred Armisen interview is a chaotically delicious trainwreck that makes no linear sense but gives you a fantastic sense of both of them.

  21. Jeff says:

Claire Zulkey is the greatest for rooting for Karen & Jim on The Office (US). More so, because I hadn’t seen any female make the argument until: http://www.lindsayism.com/2

  22. Lionel says:

I think Michael Mann is the greatest. He made a movie about Ali, so by transition… Plus his movies totally kick ass.

  23. Kevin says:

    Thomas Edison.

Invented the tin-foil phonograph in 1877. Others before Edison had tried to record sound, but Edison and his tinfoil phonograph were the first to succeed.
