God's Own Singer

It feels like Monday, but it’s already Wednesday. It’s gonna be a good (short) week.

They are currently making a film based on the death of Gram Parsons, or more accurately, the theft of his corpse. It’s a great story, and I’m hoping it’ll be done well (though the casting of lead Jackass Johnny Knoxville as Phil Kaufman doesn’t fill me with great excitement). Being a convincing actor is not the same thing as riding a shopping cart into the side of a semi. Anyway, Grand Theft Parsons is released in the UK on September 19, and hopefully there’ll be a North American release to follow.

Featuring Birds

At Sudeep’s recommendation, I went to see Winged Migration at Market Square, the new discount movie theatre in Toronto ($5.50 matinee!!). It’s a documentary that follows the migration of all sorts of birds across all continents, using some I-don’t-know-how-they-did-it camera technology to follow the birds up close, everywhere they went. Really, the cinematography is amazing. I think a ‘making of’ would be just as fascinating as the film itself, and that’s saying something. Hopefully the DVD will come loaded with extras. It’s not a must-buy, but I would rent it for decent bonus features. And Winged Migration takes the prize for least likely place to find a Nick Cave song (his song, “To Be By Your Side” runs over the closing credits). Good film, recommended if you like birds. Nature kicks ass.

I also watched Mr. Deeds, which was surprisingly funny and I didn’t feel ashamed to enjoy it. I think I actually don’t mind Adam Sandler when he’s NOT playing a retard. And Winona. Ah, Winona.

Best Liz Phair review ever.
